<image:caption>Inspiration: See the Original Green Man description for details about the mythic background for the Green Man. This Green Person is a variation on the same themes—birth, death, rebirth; vegetation, creation, regeneration. But this Green Person doesn’t quite seem like a Green Man, so I call it a Green Person. Materials: Internal structure is a flexible wire armature wrapped with batting. Exterior: the batting-covered body was painted with assorted fabric dyes to give it a plant-like surface. This “bark” body was then partially covered with silk leaves, then clothed. Hand-painted silk was sewn into a skirt and cut into long, flowing, leaf-life strips. Ribbon-and-crochet fabric was sewn into a loose tunic and decorated with more silk leaves. The head was made of stuffed, painted fabric, covered with a myriad of silk leaves of different colors and sizes; the eyes, nose, forehead ornament, and necklace were made from pink and green ribbon, beaded into flower-like medallions. Hand-painted velvet was cut into boots, then decorated with green flower ribbons. Description: Approximately 34” tall.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Fiber Alchemies - The Green Man</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: This Green Man incarnated in March 2005, the result of a dream. He is the first mythic fiber sculpture I ever made. The Green Man is a common symbol in Europe, found carved on walls or columns in medieval churches. Usually all you see is the head of the Green Man. It may be a face staring out of the foliage, surrounded by leaves, or a face completely covered with leaves, or a face with vines coming out (or going into?) its mouth. My dream, however, insisted that I create a full figure, not just a face. Materials: velvet, cotton batik, felt, metallic fabric, metallic threads, ribbons, beads, and buttons. Internal structure: flexible wire covered with foam, wrapped with batting. Description: Approximately 36” tall.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Fiber Alchemies - Green Man With Roses</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: See the Original Green Man description for details about the mythic background for the Green Man. This Green Man is a variation on the same theme: birth, death, rebirth; vegetation, creation, regeneration.Unlike the first Green Man, however, this one is clearly a denizen of the forest: his “skin” is very bark-like in texture and covered with trailing, twisting vines, and he carries a bag of roses. Materials: Internal structure is a flexible wire armature wrapped with batting. Exterior: the batting-covered body was painted with assorted fabric dyes to give it a plant-like surface; novelty yarns and chenille were finger-woven over the batting to create a vine-like covering. The face is made of stiffened felt, painted with green and metallic fabric dyes. His cap is hand-painted velvet, adorned with leaf-shaped stone beads. The same velvet forms his bag, filled with red silk roses. Leaf-shaped stone beads dangle from his felt-leaf head, and a crystal leaf bead accents his nose. Wooden beads substitute for fingernails, glass buttons for eyes. He holds a found-wood staff. Description: Approximately 36” tall. Juried into the 2007 Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta and the 2007 Art Center at Fuller Lodge (Los Alamos) show, "Bold Expressions in Clay, Fiber, and Wood." In a private collection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inspiration:This dark lady was eager to come into this world, but then she waited for some time without accoutrements, waiting, waiting. Then suddenly I found the material for her cape, and the rest of her apparel materialized within days. Materials:Interior wire armature; black fabric body stuffed with wool, wrapped with batting. Face is needle-sculpted. Her brilliant hair is multicolor wool roving and sparkling Angelina fibers. Hooded cape is Japanese needle-felted fabric. I hand-wove the tunic from hand-spun wool and mixed, sparkly-fiber yarn. Sandals are leather and rawhide. Around her waist is a “golden” cord. Description: Approximately 29” tall. <image:title>Fiber Alchemies - Fly by Night</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: “Fly by Night” a humanlike bird or a birdlike human? “She” began as a Roc (the immense bird that purportedly carried Sinbad to safety) but in that form “she” was much too ungainly—and not nearly human enough. Eventually “she” morphed into an upright figure with wings, claws, hands, and a human-like face, even if it is yellow…. I’ve been told “she” resembles a cross-dresser at a Gay Rights parade, but I’m not sure that does either of them justice. “She” (or is it?) is quite flighty, ready to fly off on the slightest pretext—but there’s something a little scarey about her stare…. Materials: Interior is poseable wire armature, covered with black fabric “skin” stuffed with wool. Wings are multiple layers of fabrics. Materials include holographic Lycras, silk brocade, feathers and boas, and novelty yarns and trims. The face is yellow- and glitter-painted Paperclay™ with faceted glass bead “eyes.” Techniques include quilting and wrapping. Description: Approximately 36” tall with approx. 29” wingspan, depending on how she flies. Juried into the 2008 “Red Dominant” show at The Art Center at Fuller Lodge, Los Alamos, NM.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Fiber Alchemies - Silkie, the Selkie</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: An image came to me in meditation. I was standing at the crossroads, and a number of creatures began moving toward me from all directions. From the west a seal waddled out of the water. As it approached it began to morph until, when it came up beside me, it was walking upright and resembled a human as much as a seal. Materials: Internal structure is a poseable wire armature; wool batting is stuffed into cloth “skin.” Silkie’s body is needle-felted off-white wool, highlighted with black. Its “feet” and hands are painted fabric. Silkie wears a silvery-grey velvet cape, gathered around the neck by a hand-painted silk cord tipped with glass fish. In its right hand it holds a mask… Description: Approximately 32” tall.  </image:caption>

I originally thought I would be creating a phoenix, but that was not to be, although they are extremely closely related, of course. Materials: Magenta sparkly Lycra, printed cottons, sequin-lace fabric to drape the wings, trims, yarns for tail and legs, assorted feathers, bead and metallic crochet trims. Internal structure: wire armature with moveable wings, mesh for chest volume, all wrapped in batting. Description: Approximately 24” tall and 36” long, including tail fringe. <image:caption>Inspiration: See the original Green Man description for details about the mythic background for the Green Man. This Green Man is a variation on the same theme: birth, death, rebirth; vegetation, creation, regeneration. Materials: Internal structure is a flexible wire armature wrapped with batting. Exterior: the batting-covered body was painted with assorted fabric dyes to give it a plant-like surface. This surface was then covered with hand-made Angelina fabric (heat-sensitive iridescent filaments), which was then ironed onto the Green Man to form an iridescent, metallic skin. Green fabric leaves were cut from a scarf and inserted into the Angelina fabric or glued over it. Hand-dyed cheesecloth edged in silk ribbon forms his cape. His eyes are multi-faceted buttons. I began working on it during the Iraq conflict and the tsunami disaster, completing it on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The field of crosses represents the markers on mass graves—the aftermath of wars, natural catastrophes, genocides. The crosses seem to glide off into eternity. <image:title>Art Quilts - Ottoman Dreams: A Flat Screen TV Cover</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: We wanted to keep the flat-screen HD TV covered when not in use, but we didn’t want to put it in a large cabinet. I created a fiber-art TechnoCover to solve the problem and to provide an attractive visual addition to our living room. I designed the TechnoCover as a riff on the colors in our Turkish carpets and Kilim-upholstered furniture. Historic Ottoman tents and pavilions were the inspiration for the design. Materials: Hand-dyed cottons were cut to form abstract tents and pavilions, then quilted to batting and red chintz backing. The pieces were then partially sewn to the red dupioni silk background and the red chintz backing, using various glitzy threads. The pieces seem to float against the background since they are not completely sewn down. The dupioni silk was quilted to the backing with glitzy threads. This TechnoCover drapes over the top of the TV but doesn’t cover the vents on the back. Description: 38” wide x 45” high. TechnoCovers can be custom-designed to meet your needs. <image:title>Narrative Tableaux - Aladdin and the Lamp</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: It came to me in meditation that Aladdin was the same as the Arabic name Allauddin, which means “Nobility of the Path/Nobility of the Faith.” And then I realized that the dingy lamp he found by going deep into the cave (deep within) was, in fact, the Divine Light that shines within each of us. Materials: The figure of Aladdin/Allauddin is constructed with a wire armature, covered with stretch cotton Lycra and stuffed with wool. His face is molded from Creative Paperclay, painted, like the rest of his body, with Jacquard textile paints. His hair is black fake-fur fabric. He is dressed in Ikat silk pantaloons, off-white silk tussah shirt with gold trim, green brocade vest lined with gold and red brocade, and a glittery gold and red waist sash. He wears tall lambskin leather boots trimmed in gold. A gold starburst with semi-precious stones pins his shirt closed at the neck. Rings adorn his fingers. A large Model Magic dagger is stuck into his waist sash. The base is fabric-covered and painted with Fleckstone. A tiny, electrified lamp lights up the cave. Description: The base is 24” long x 20” wide. Aladdin/Allauddin is 26” tall.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inspiration: Another meditation, another image: Jonah and the Big Fish. Materials: The base was spray-painted with green American Accents Stone Creations texturized paint to represent the ocean. Fabric waves, stiffened with double-sided fusible Pellon 72, adorn the base. A gold Shiva paint stick added glitter to the waves. The Big Fish is formed out of papier mâché, constructed over a wire and mesh armature. Its inside was coated with Sculptamold, then painted with pinkish-grey American Accents Stone Creations spray paint. The scales are overlapping scallops of yellow, orange, and pinkish-orange packcloth. Its tail and two fins are Angelina fibers, with yarn inclusions; its eyes are made of Model Magic, a flexible, air-dry material. The pupils are rhinestone ornaments. Its teeth are Model Magic, painted with pearlescent Jacquard paint. Description: The base is 2’ x 4’. The Big Fish is 3’ long x 18” wide by 18” high at the widest point; its tail is 12” long. <image:title>Narrative Tableaux - Abraham, Isaac, and the Ram</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: The image came to me in meditation while listening to a reading during High Holy Days celebrations. The biblical text (Genesis 22:1-19) is entitled “Abraham’s Faith Confirmed” in the NKJV. G-d tests Abraham: he calls to him, and Abraham replies, “Here I am.” Then G-d tells him to take his son Isaac and offer him as a burnt offering on a mountain in the land of Moriah. (Isaac is Abraham’s beloved son, granted to him and Sarah by G-d long after normal childbearing and child-creating years—according to the text, Sarah was in menopause and Abraham was 100 years old [Gen. 18]) Materials: The figure of Abraham is constructed with a wire armature, covered with stretch cotton Lycra and stuffed with wool. His face is molded from Creative Paperclay, painted, like the rest of his body, with Jacquard textile paints. Abraham’s eyes are hematite beads; his hair is off-white, curly mohair. He is dressed in a striped caftan; he wears leather sandals. Isaac is made from a wooden artist’s manikin, painted reddish brown; his face is molded from Model Magic, painted with Jacquard paints; his hair is fake-fur fabric. His clothes are purchased doll clothes, altered to fit. The ram has a wire armature, covered with fake-fur fabric. His face and hoofs are made out of Model Magic, painted with Jacquard paints. The upright ram, leaning on the bush, is based on the 3rd millennium BCE figure found in a royal tomb in Ur. (Note the similarity in color and texture of Isaac and the ram.) Description: The base is 28” long x 24” wide. Abraham is 26” tall; Isaac is 16”, and the ram is 8”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Narrative Tableaux - Mary Magdalene, Sarah, and “He Who Has Risen from the Dead”</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: I recently read a fascinating book about Mary Magdalene by Siobhan Houston (Sounds True Publ.) and starting thinking about the legends that surround her, including the “alternative history” stories that claim she married Jesus and, after he disappeared from his tomb in the cave, they fled to Egypt. Materials: Mary Magdalene and “He Who…” are wire-based forms, stuffed with wool batting, covered with “doll skin,” and painted. Their faces are painted Paperclay. Her hair is dyed wool roving; his is dyed mohair. He is wrapped in a single length of white cotton and has an ankh dangling from a chain that hangs around his neck; she wears a wrapped white cotton gown covered by a caftan of silk noile, dyed with natural mineral dyes; she wears an semi-precious stone pendant decorated with a silver snake. They both wear leather sandals. Sarah is made from a stained wooden artist’s manikin; her face is made from painted Model Magic; her hair is dyed mohair. Sarah’s dress is coarse Japanese blue cotton. Description: The base is 36” long x 24” wide. Mary M. and “He Who” are 26” tall; Sarah is 16” tall.</image:caption>

<image:title>Narrative Tableaux - Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: The image of Adam and Eve, the Tree, and two snakes came to me during meditation on Genesis 3.1-3.24. I also imagined including four rivers flowing out from under the Tree of Knowledge (as described in Genesis), and the Garden surrounded with twelve gates (“There’s twelve gates to the City, Halleluiah….”). I saw a winged cherub watching patiently for Adam and Eve to pluck from the tree and get kicked out of the Garden.   Materials: Adam and Eve are adjustable wood artist manikins covered with fabric “skin.” Both figures have bead nipples, and their genitals are hidden beneath beaded, sequined fig leafs. Eve’s hair is yarn; an embroidered leaf ribbon adorns her neck and a floral ribbon serves as her headband. Adam’s hair and beard are upholstery trim. Description: Construction is 3’ x 2’ at the lowest level of the base. Tree is 41” tall. Adam and Eve are 26” high. The cherub is 15” from nose to tail.</image:caption>

<image:title>Narrative Tableaux - The Shekinah/Queen of Heaven and Four of the Magi</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: It came to me in meditation that I had to make a tableau of the Magi—but with a feminine presence, the Shekinah, witnessing the Magi bringing their gifts. According to Hebrew tradition, the Shekinah is the indwelling aspect of G-d, a quality often associated with the feminine. (As the figure took form, she gained a crown and another name: The Queen of Heaven, a name that draws on Christian and pre-Christian traditions.) Materials: The foam base is spray painted with beige-brown Fleck Stone. The Magi have wire armatures, padded and covered with “skin,” then clothed. Their faces are molded from air-dried Creative Paperclay; bodies and faces are painted with a mixture of different Jacquard paints. The figures’ hair is made of red wool, black and white merino and silk, white mohair, and brown angora yarns. Description: The base is 4’ x 2’. The four kneeling Magi are 26”-tall pose-able figures, three male, one female. The Shekinah/Queen of Heaven is approximately 26” tall, not including her crown.</image:caption>

Description: The base is 28” long x 24” wide. Abraham is 26” tall; Isaac is 16”, and the ram is 8”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inspiration: It came to me in meditation to make shrines for each of the four “inner temples” linked to the four directions. The first is the Fire Temple shrine. Materials: The outsides of three of the walls are made of antique embroidered and mirrored Indian fabric; doorways are edged in with gold sequin trims. The insides of the same three walls are silk, quilted with flame-like designs to batting and then hand beaded. The insides and outsides are ironed to stiff doubled-sided Pellon to form the walls. Stiff metal rods support the sides and the frames of the doors. The floor has a sri yantra mandala embroidered on it with decorative gold thread; the inside back wall has a flame appliquéd and trapuntoed inside an upward-pointing triangle inside a circle, surrounded by a quilted sun-sign. The outside back wall has an Indian beaded and embroidered triangle appliquéd onto silk The roof is made of triangles framed with metal rods and covered with layers of beaded wire material and sheer red metallic fabric, trimmed with ribbon. Description: The shrine can be folded up: the top lifts off and folds into four triangles; the four walls detach from the base and fold flat. Juried into the 2008 "Red Dominant" show at The Art Center at Fuller Lodge, Los Alamos, NM.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inspiration: One day I suddenly knew I had to make a Burning Bush fiber sculpture. It had to have 33 leaves of flame, some more “burnt” than others. (33 is a sacred number in various traditions: 3 x 11, two prime numbers joined together.) Materials: Leaves of hand-dyed and commercial cottons, silk, felt (some glittery), taffeta, glitz lame, novelty fabrics; metallic and variegated threads; batting; sequins; fancy knitting yarns; metallic embellishments; ribbon. Base is layered particleboard covered with painted fabric, then sprayed with Fleckstone paint. Decorative machine stitching, couching, and appliqué; hand stitching. Description: Approximately 45” x 45,” depending on the shaping of the leaves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inspiration: Perfect for a color accent and a bit of warmth on a cool day.    Materials: Silk gauze with wisps of wool, silk, yarn, silk or Tencel fibers, threads, etc. Description: I have much to learn about making felt garments. Since nuno-felted garments (and scarves) shrink approximately 35-50%, creating them takes a large workspace. The silk gauze for one of the capelets was 110” (280 cm) long and 30” (75 cm) wide when I began; the capelet ended up 55” (140 cm) long and 16” (40 cm) wide.   </image:caption>

<image:caption>Inspiration: I came to Girona from far away, responding to a dream that called me to the Call of Girona to remember the medieval Jews who died here centuries ago. Why me? Although I was not raised Jewish, perhaps my Russian Jewish ancestors were calling me to remember. I contemplated on the name and (if there was one) epigraph on each tombstone as I made the vessel that represents the person. Materials: Hand-felted North Ronaldsay sheep wool in natural colors, silky Tencel roving, curly Wensleydale locks. The area is strongly associated with Mary Magdalene; the Holy Cave of Ste Baume, in the massif, was purportedly where she lived her last 30 years, sustained by communion wafers and lifted up to the Heavens at least daily. It is now a popular Catholic pilgrimage shrine. The Cave of the Eggs is located in the same massif but is very hard to reach. <image:caption>Inspiration: When I began imagining artwork for “Bone Voyage,” I was immediately transported back in time to my ancestors. I “saw” four figures—two male, two female—emerging out of a vessel that represents the Earth as the World Egg of creation. These four beings are my ancestors of spirit, ancestors who dedicated their lives to the quest for spiritual communion and enlightenment. Materials: The vessel is wet-felted from different kinds of wool—Bergschaf natural wool on the outside and grey merinos inside. The egg-yolk smear is a mix of yellow merino wool and white silk fiber. The fully pose-able figures are needle-felted around armatures, using different kinds of wool for bodies, clothing, and hair. Description: Approximately 14”high x 10” wide. Figures are 6”-9” tall.</image:caption>

      <image:title>In Memoriam - In Memoriam 1</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: “In Memoriam" is a conceptual art project of 27 unique felted vessels. Each of these vessels represents a medieval Jew whose inscribed tombstone was once located in Montjuïc cemetery, Girona. 26 of these broken gravestones, etched with partially illegible names and dates, are on display in the Museum of the History of the Jews in Girona. They are a poignant reminder of the human desire to be immortal versus the ephemeral briefness of our lives—the ongoing dialogue between permanence (stone) and fragility (humans). Materials: hand-felted North Ronaldsay sheep wool in natural colors, silky Tencel roving, curly Wensleydale locks. Description: Each vessel is approximately 5” in diameter by x 6” in height, but each is distinct in size, shape, and mix of materials.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cave of Eggs 1 - Cave of Eggs 1.2</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspiration: A visit to the limestone Grotte de les Oeufs (Cave of the Eggs), located in the Massif-de-la Ste-Baume, near St-Maximin-La-Ste-Baume and very close to Plan d’Aups, Provence, France. It has been a pilgrimage site for millennia and is associated with fertility. Inside the vessel are felted eggs. Materials: Wet-felted with different kinds of wool in layers, yarns, and silk “hankies.” Description: Approximately 22 cm (8.5”) high x 17 cm (6.5”) wide.</image:caption>
