“Green Man With Cape ”

NAME: Green Man with Cape:

DIMENSIONS: Approximately 39” tall.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Internal structure is a flexible wire armature wrapped with batting. Exterior: the batting-covered body was painted with assorted fabric dyes to give it a plant-like surface. This surface was then covered with hand-made Angelina fabric (heat-sensitive iridescent filaments), which was then ironed onto the Green Man to form an iridescent, metallic skin. Green fabric leaves were cut from a scarf and inserted into the Angelina fabric or glued over it. Hand-dyed cheesecloth edged in silk ribbon forms his cape. His eyes are multi-faceted buttons.

THE INSPIRATION AND INTENTION: See the Original Green Man description for details about the mythic background for the Green Man. This Green Man is a variation on the same theme: birth, death, rebirth; vegetation, creation, regeneration.

This Green Man, however, has a very different feeling—regal, alien, royal, a keeper of mysteries. I think he is somehow related to Khidr, the Green Man of the Desert…. There is the striking visual contrast of metallic/iridescent “bark” and the matt-toned leaves that sprout all over his body. He is tall and very thin; his head is narrow. Some say he resembles an Ent from Middle Earth. His mouth is covered with leaves, indicating that he has secrets he cannot reveal. Leaves form his ears and the top of his head, which resembles a crown, and leaves cascade down his wrists, covering his hands, and down his ankles, covering his feet.
